This April 24–27, put your curiosity to work for science. The City Nature Challenge is the world’s largest community science event, bringing people together across hundreds of cities to document the wildlife living alongside us — from the insects in your garden to the birds overhead.
This year, Wild Ones Wayne County has partnered with the Detroit Zoo to promote the effort right here in our own backyard. Every observation you log helps scientists better understand urban biodiversity — and the data you collect can become a part of a global picture shared through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
Getting involved is easy. Download the iNaturalist app, head outside, and start snapping photos of plants, animals, fungi — anything living. If you’re new to iNaturalist or just want some company, join us on April 25th for a guided workshop with Kelly Konieczki, where you’ll learn the app and explore the natural world around you.
Whether you have five minutes in your yard or an afternoon in a local park, your observations matter. Let’s show the world what’s living in Detroit and all of Wayne County!
The City Nature Challenge is just one of many ways to get involved in community science year-round. Visit our Community Science page to explore apps, projects, and initiatives you can contribute to in any season.
