The North Oakland Chapter of Wild Ones is hosting an interesting speaker at their September Monthly Meeting:

"Conservation of Prairie Fens in Southern Michigan"


Speaker: Ayden Ehgotz, Conservation Coordinator, Michigan Nature Association

Prairie fens are a rare type of wetland found in southern Michigan. These unique communities are home to some of the rarest species of flora and fauna remaining in Michigan, including the globally critically endangered Poweshiek Skipperling. Ayden will discuss the processes that form prairie fens and the threats they face.

Ayden is responsible for the Nature Sanctuaries in southeast Michigan, from volunteer coordination to collaboration with researchers and other partners. A graduate of Oakland University, Ayden feels lucky to call this incredible region home.

Earlier this month, Ayden hosted NOWO members and friends on a hike through the Big Valley Nature Sanctuary in Rose Township. This natural area, not open to the public, took participants through a beautiful tallgrass prairie filled with goldenrod, asters, sunflowers and other native plants. We also viewed a sensitive prairie fen from its edge.
